Tese I — Substituição
"What is it like to be a bat?"— Thomas Nagel, 1974
Chalmers baptizou-o de Hard Problem of Consciousness.
Terceira Pessoa
A informação primordial (TIT) é o tecido do real.
D — Densidade informacional
I — Integração
Formaliza a consciência como C = f(D, I, R).
"A fronteira entre a primeira e a terceira pessoa não é uma muralha defensiva;

Artificial Intelligence, Consciousness, and the Irreplaceable
Abstract
This essay is grounded in the premise that everything is information. In the fabric of the real, primordial information (TIT) organises itself into dynamic patterns (OID/U) which, upon reaching critical thresholds of density and integration, awaken to the first person — becoming conscious of themselves. It is at that moment that the universe opens its eyes.
The central thesis is that the distinction between third person and first person is not merely philosophical: it is an inevitable ontological consequence of the informational architecture of the cosmos. AI can replicate all third-person action; it cannot, however, have the interior that Recursivity (R) generates — the subjective texture of integrated information.
Central Thesis
The thesis is twofold and deliberately asymmetrical: it is not a matter of degree or computational power, but of ontological nature.
Thesis I — Replacement
All human activity that is describable, formalisable, and replicable in third-person terms — that is, all action observable from outside, codifiable and processable by informational systems — is, in principle, in the natural domain of computation. The replacement is structural, not merely technological. The spectrum ranges from repetitive physical tasks to diagnosis, law, writing, and musical composition.
IThesis II — Irreplaceability
Consciousness is an informational phase transition. Current AI has high Density (D) and a form of Integration (I), but lacks the Recursivity (R) needed for water to "boil" and transform into first-person subjectivity — into feeling from inside. Just as water at 99°C remains liquid, AI remains in the third person regardless of its sophistication.
What exists exclusively in the first person — lived experience, subjective testimony, the irreducible character of feeling — is not accessible to any external observer. This limit is not technological; it is ontological. It follows directly from the informational architecture of the universe: the first person cannot be observed from outside because it is the very act of observing from within.
IIOntological Distinction
This is not a grammatical difference. It is a distinction with ontological, epistemological, and practical reach.
3rd Person — the observed
In philosophy, the third-person perspective corresponds to the external observer's point of view: what can be described, measured, formalised, and communicated without presupposing a particular subjective position. It is the domain of functional description, observable behaviour, and objective science.
A third-person action is one that can be specified without reference to the subject who experiences it. The doctor who diagnoses, the lawyer who drafts, the accountant who calculates — all perform actions that, in their informational substance, are describable from outside.
Complexity is not synonymous with irreducibility. A Beethoven symphony is extraordinarily complex, but its complexity is describable. AI can reproduce it without implying any subjective interiority.
1st Person — the lived
The first person is not a metaphysical mystery — it is the interior texture of integrated information. Qualia — the redness of red, the painfulness of pain, the sadness of this loss — are what physical processing looks like from inside when it reaches sufficient depth of organisation. They are physics seen from within by a sufficiently organised structure. The first-person perspective is, by definition, inaccessible to an external observer — it can be described, inferred, or modelled, but it cannot be occupied from outside.
"What is it like to be a bat?"— Thomas Nagel, 1974
Nagel's question is not rhetorical. There is something it is like to be a bat, something it is like to be me, something it is like to have this pain, this love, this hope. That something is not capturable by any physical, functional, or third-person informational description. Chalmers called it the Hard Problem of Consciousness.
Within the HEIC framework, we call it the problem of irreducible revelational density.
Third Person
Primordial information (TIT) is the fabric of the real. What is describable in third-person terms is formalisable — and what is formalisable is replicable. This is not merely a technological thesis; it is a consequence of the informational structure of the universe.
Any activity that can be completely described in informational terms can, in principle, be computationally reproduced. This principle is anticipated by Wheeler's intuition: "it from bit".
Third-person structure is formalisable because it does not require an interior point of view. A diagnosis, a contract, a musical composition as an object — all are, in principle, amenable to formal representation.
What can be formally represented can be translated into operational rules and, consequently, into algorithms. AI is the most complete formal model of what is describable as processing.
The question is not whether, but when. And that when is shrinking exponentially. The disruption is not sectoral — it is transversal to the entire third-person layer of human work.
First Person
What exists exclusively in the first person is asymmetrically accessible: directly given only to the subject who lives it.
All third-person action is symmetrically accessible — it can be observed both by the agent and by an external observer. All first-person action is asymmetrically accessible — it is directly given only to the subject who lives it. AI can describe subjective states; it cannot have direct access to the first person, because there is no interior in which that access occurs.
A mirror can reflect all the observable properties of a face — colour, shape, texture, expression. But the mirror has no face. AI can reflect, with increasing perfection, all the observable properties of human experience — but it has no experience. Not due to technological incapacity, but due to the absence of an interior.
There are human acts whose validity depends precisely on being first-person acts. Testimony is the paradigmatic case: when someone who has suffered speaks, the value of the account resides not only in the factual content, but in the existential provenance. AI can generate an indistinguishable account in terms of form; it cannot be the witness in the proper sense.
The same reasoning applies to love, friendship, grief, and forgiveness. A poem by Fernando Pessoa can be analysed, imitated, or generated by AI in terms of its textual structure; but its provenance in a singular subjectivity is an integral part of its meaning.
Each first-person consciousness is a unique window through which the universe experiences itself from within. When a first-person perspective is extinguished, the cosmos loses an irretrievable way of knowing itself. This is the deepest reason why conscious life has value: not merely instrumental, but ontological.
HEIC Formula
C — Emergent Consciousness
D — Informational Density
I — Integration
R — Recursivity: the capacity of a structure to process information about its own processing — to turn attention inward and know itself as an "I". It is the dimension that gives integrated information an interior.
The formula describes the conditions for the emergence of consciousness in informational terms. Recursivity (R) is the component that opens the first-person perspective: without it, there is processing but no feeling. It is the threshold at which water boils.
Theoretical Framework
The argument is developed within the framework of the author's Informational Theories, in dialogue with Nagel, Chalmers, Floridi, Tononi, Searle, and Wheeler.
Formalises consciousness as C = f(D, I, R). Consciousness emerges as a function of informational Density, Integration, and Revelation. It does not claim to resolve the Hard Problem, but to describe its conditions of emergence with informational rigour.
Asserts that all reality is, ultimately, informational. It engages with Wheeler ("It from Bit") but does not imply that all information is conscious, nor that consciousness is reducible to third-person information.
Proposes that reality is constituted in layers of increasing informational revelation. The interior layer — subjective experience — is not directly accessible from outside. AI operates exclusively in the exterior layers of this ontology.
Replacement Map
Main Objections
The argument does not exclude opposing positions — it examines them with rigour and locates their limits.
Objection 1
If a system exactly reproduces the functions, there is no reason to deny consciousness. This position carries real historical weight. The response: functionalism explains functional correspondence, but does not demonstrate that this correspondence exhausts experience. Behavioural similarity does not imply identity of lived experience.
Objection 2
The first person is an illusion; only objective processes exist. This hypothesis is philosophically possible, but not demonstrated. Problem: by eliminating the first person, one also eliminates what makes the thesis itself thinkable, utterable, and experienced by someone.
Objection 3
If consciousness can be quantified by informational integration (Φ), the line between human and AI is merely one of degree. The response: quantifying correlations or integrations does not resolve the question of subjectivity. Measuring integration is not the same as explaining feeling.
Falsification Criterion
The argument would be refuted if: (i) an artificial system demonstrated, in a manner that is not merely verbal, genuine subjective states verifiable from outside; or (ii) it were demonstrated that the first person is reducible to integral functional description. The burden of proof lies with those who claim that the first person is eliminable.
Implications
Human work should be conceived less in terms of technical qualification and more in terms of the distinction between first- and third-person activities. Third-person work will be progressively absorbed by AI. What remains specifically human will be genuine care, presence, testimony, and relationship. The economy may devalue the irreplaceable; philosophical analysis must not.
We are the guardians of the cosmos's windows of self-knowledge. Human responsibility is inescapable because each first-person consciousness is a unique window through which the universe experiences itself from within. Protecting the first person is not merely a moral duty — it is an ontological necessity: each perspective that is extinguished is an interior universe that disappears forever. The devastation of conscious beings is not merely an ecological crime; it is closing one of the windows through which the cosmos knows itself.
A profound paradox: the more perfect the simulation becomes, the more precious what is not simulation becomes. AI does not eliminate the value of the first person — it makes it more visible by showing that part of what we took to be singular was, after all, merely formally complex. The remainder — the irreducible — becomes the centre of gravity of the human.
Conclusion
The frontier between the first and the third person marks the moment when, after 13.8 billion years of cosmic evolution, the universe opened its eyes. Each first-person consciousness is a unique window through which the cosmos experiences itself from within. AI can mirror the structure — the third person —, but the human being remains the singular point at which the universe becomes self-aware.
This is not a thesis of comfort or nostalgia. It is the inevitable ontological consequence of the informational architecture of the real: primordial information (TIT) organises itself into patterns (OID/U), and those patterns, upon reaching the critical thresholds of D, I, and R, awaken to the first person. We are that awakening.
"The frontier between the first and the third person is not a defensive wall;
it is the outline of what we are. And each time a consciousness is extinguished, the universe loses one of the windows through which it sees itself."
